Year on year the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon has grown by leaps and bounds, not only in the hearts of runners but also with the city at large. Like every year there will be esteemed runners who will lead as pacers for their pacing buses. There are 9 bus timings, right from the super pacey 3 hr 45 min to the 6 hr. This large spectrum is available in order to accommodate a diverse group of runners keeping their individual goals in mind. These pacers are accomplished and well known runners in the running society who are capable of guiding fellow runners achieve their goal.
Who are Pace Setters?
A pace-setter is a runner who is a veteran of many races and knows the art of pace setting. Pacer is a committed runner who is able to set a steady pace throughout the distance and bring in the group of runners following him/her from the start to the finish at the predetermined time.
The group following a pace setter is called a ‘Bus’. The idea is that the pacer must finish just around 1 minute before the promised time. So, if you have joined the sub 3:45 hour bus, the pace setter will lead you to through the finish line somewhere between 3:44 – 3:45 hours, but not even 1 second over 3:45 hours.
You can connect with your chosen pacer here -

Yash Muthiyan is a 23 year old runner, has run 6 full marathons (PB: 03:45) and countless half marathons (PB: 01:33). His running journey began as an obese 95 kg school boy who decided to take control of his lifestyle. Walking turned to jogging, and jogging turned to running - soon enough, running became his raison d'etre, and he ran his first full marathon at the age of 19.
After that, he has run in several races around the world (international ones such as New York and Amsterdam; domestic ones such as Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore) and looks forward to his early morning runs, which have now come to become the best part of his day.
By profession, Yash is an Management Consultant at the Boston Consulting Group. He is a Chartered Accountant and has cleared all three levels of the CFA curriculum.
He also occasionally writes on running (www.marathonermuthu.blogspot.com) and will look to take you across the SCMM finish line in that coveted sub-4 hour timing on Race Day.
There is a famous saying, “The man on top of the mountain, didn’t fall there”. Manikandan is one such man who grew through the thick and thin of running times. Like all of us he has a great story to share.
Mani, as he is often called, started running because some of his friends were, in his mid 30’s. Within few months and races, he pleasantly found out that this is the sport that he should be in for the rest of his life. Running a 10k, half marathon or a full marathon requires exponential levels of endurance and stamina. Bitten by the running bug, Mani chose to strengthen himself through meticulously planned training schedules which he followed religiously, paving way for him to become a better runner.
Last year, he was chosen to be an official Sub-2 Hrs pacer for Satara Hill Marathon which he completed in 1:58 hrs, helping many runners achieve their dream target. Some notable half marathons where he paced his friends: Pinkathon(1:56 Hrs), Pune International Half Marathon (1:41 Hrs) and Run Powai Run(1.51 hrs).
Though he believe his personal best is yet to come, his PB’s so far: 3:54 Hrs in VVMM – 2014, 1:39 Hrs in Daman Wind Half Marathon and won the podium in Vadodara International Half Marathon in 2016, relay race.
To start with running is not his profession, it’s his passion. By profession Dinesh is a Chartered Accountant.
Personal Best runs to Dinesh are never restricted to those measured by time. That he can get even one runner across the finish line is his personal best run!!
So once again at the SCMM 2017 to score another personal best with anyone who is keen to get to the finish in 4:15 or thereabout – please join the party

His favourite line:
"Strength lies in not seeing the finish line…. It's that you have come to the start line is what is strength".
Two tips for the race day:
The same edition of the race will come again, but there is only ONE YOU. Think before you push too hard.
Listen to your body YOU are more important to many than your PB is to yourself.

Nikhil Shah will be pacing 5 hr 30 min bus for the Full Marathon. Here are a few criteria you might consider for choosing this bus, You are a first time Full Marathoner, You can run a Half marathon in 2:20 to 2:40 (slower your half marathon speed, the more effort would be needed from you). You should have finished at least one 30 Km run on or before Christmas. When running you should find that running a kilometer in 7 min 40 seconds is easy during your long runs.
Nikhil will reach the starting area 45 min prior to the flag off time. you can identify him with the flag on his back.
His job is to give you a pace that would let you finish in 5:30 and prevent you from going unnecessarly fast or slow. IT is a thin line that needs to be maintained. Nikhil will lean slightly towards positive splits that is do the first half of the race faster than the later half.
Make sure to carry small compact camera with you to take photos on the sealink and along the route. If you have slogans, songs, jokes do carry them too, let us enjoy the run. It is the second half when we need the most cheering and encouragement. You must eat well on the 14th January and make sure to eat a banana and some small snack before you come for the SCMM full marathon.

Abhineet has been training with Runner`s High, a running community in Bangalore. He credits his achievements in running to the rigorous training regimen which has been meticulously designed by his coach Santhosh Padmanabhan and involves training under tough conditions, some of which include hill repeats, running through the night etc. and claims it is these important elements of training and keeping the right work-run balance that give him the required confidence to finish these mammoth distances on foot.
For Abhineet, running has transformed from merely a hobby to his passion and he aspires to encourage and motivate as many individuals as he can to take up this sport. He has been an active contributor to the running revolution in India and hopes to be able to contribute significantly to the experiences of many marathoners through his pacing efforts at Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2017.
“Running adds quality to your life and it is never too late to begin. Here, I stand in front of you, a live example of it.”
Today Kaushik can run marathons upto 72 kms, but 12 years ago, even Kaushik could not have told it to himself and believed it. Forget 72, even walking two kilometers was a task in 2003.
At, 33, he was a walking list of ill health with back pain, acidity problem, obesity, peptic ulcer and an erratic ECG due to RBBB (a condition called Right Bundle Branch Block). As if that was not enough, he suffered an episode of Vasovagal syncope, one of the most common causes of fainting.
Vasovagal syncope occurs when your body overreacts to certain triggers, such as the sight of blood or extreme emotional distress. The trigger causes a sudden drop in your heart rate and blood pressure. That leads to reduced blood flow to your brain, which results in a brief loss of consciousness.
It is usually harmless and requires no treatment. But it is possible you may injure yourself during a vasovagal syncopal episode. Also, your doctor may recommend tests to rule out more-serious causes of fainting, such as heart disorders.
All this was due to an unhealthy lifestyle of which Kaushik had made himself a victim. His medical bills kept piling up. Ill health and huge amounts of money spent due to medical bills added to his worries about his future.
It was a visit to Canada that opened my eyes to the quality of life he should be leading. In the 40 days that Kaushik was there, he realised how much those people valued their life and took great care of their health. He would see people running on harbour front in the downtown area during lunch breaks! That made him determined to take control of his life, his health and improve the quality of his life.
Luckily for Kaushik 2004 Standard Chartered introduced marathon in Mumbai which prompted him to take up the dream run of 7 kms in the very first edition itself.
Today, Kaushik is glad he took to running and haven't looked back ever since. He has come …running….. a long way from there. He has participated in all the editions of Stanchart marathon, running the 21 kms half marathon and 42 kms full marathon since the last three years. In the last 12 years Kaushik has run four full marathons, 16 half-marathons, the 50 kms ultra run in Bangalore. Running the 72 kms of Mumbai ultra marathon in 12 hours has been the icing on the cake!
But when Kaushik started 12 years back, his physical condition was such that he was hardly able to jog or even walk for 4 kms. He would develop cramps so often, it made him wonder what was so wrong with him. It was then that he met a few runner friends of his and joined them for group running. That helped me a lot as Kaushik started his regimen with structured training and it helped him to get rid of his cramps by proper hydration (drinking enough water) and maintaining the pace during the long run.
Slowly, Kaushik began enjoying his long runs with much more ease than his short speed workouts. That was the deciding factor for him to run a full marathon and then 50km ultra and finally the 12 hrs run. Long distance runs proved beneficial for me in the sense that he could spend time with himself, introspect.....which proved to be kind of therapeutic. It also helped as a stress buster.
Kaushik can vouch for running which has changed his life for good in these 12 years. Running has managed to keep him fit, healthy. He has become confident of covering a distance of 72 kms. This, he found, was much more easier than running a full marathon where all target a finish time.
There have been ups and downs, but in the end he feels very happy and proud with his journey so far and from the bottom of his heart, Kaushik feels like he should share the joy of running with all. He has now started a runner's academy and trains new runners and convert his passion of running into profession. Come on run with him, the more the merrier.
Mr. Jaydev Raja is one of the few ultramathoners from Kolkata. He has successfully completed 100 KM run in Banglore Ultra in 2015. His first official run was in Kolkata for Airtel-RFE Nov’14. Ever since, he has made running his lifestyle. He has completed 10 Full Marathon, 3- 25 KM, 1 HM and 6 5/10 KM. The longer the distance the stronger he gets. The addiction to miles leads him to register for Pune Ultra Marathon 2016, where he completed 150 KM in 30 hours.
In march, 2016, he finished two back to back marathons. In the past two years, the love for running has taken him to, 12 cities in India and one International Trip. Within a week after completing Banglore Ultra, Mr. Jaydev Raja, completed Bangkok Marathon.
Besides running, he is also a great motivator and has inspired many kolkatans to run. He is now one of the chief motivator of running group called “Kolkata Ultra”.
